Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a system of medicine based upon the principle
that like cures like called the Law of Similars by its discoverer Samuel Hahneman,
a German physician who practiced medicine in the 18th and 19th centuries. He
observed that by giving a sick person a substance that would cause an otherwise
healthy person to become ill, he could cure the sick person of their illness.
Thus the name, homeo – same, pathy – suffering. Dr. Hahneman also
observed that contrary to how physicians were dosing medicines at the time,
and in this time for that matter, the smaller the dose of medicine he gave
his patients the more enhanced their reactions and cures were. This principle
he called the Law of Minimum Dose. The choice of medicine for an individual
is based on their entire symptom picture. This is the principle of the Totality
of Symptoms. In homeopathy, an earache is never just an earache. The medicine
that alleviates the symptoms of one person may not help a different person.
The practitioner who uses homeopathy must delve into the details of the individual’s
case to find the appropriate remedy that will cure.
Because the medicines used
in homeopathy are in such small doses and non-toxic, homeopathy is ideally
suited for treating pregnant women, infants/children, the elderly, and those
who are taking other medicines and worried about drug interactions.
Homeopathy
can be used alone or in conjunction with other treatments, natural or conventional. An
initial homeopathic visit is 2-3 hours and follow up visits are generally 45
minutes.
